Overview

Requirements

You may be able to take part in the IMPEDE‑PKD trial if you:

Are between 18 and 70 years old
Have Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
Have kidney function (eGFR) between 38 and 90

And have at least one risk factor for a decrease in your kidney function. These risk factors include:

Both kidneys are longer than 16.5 cm (seen on a scan previously), or
Your kidney function (known as eGFR) has decreased by 5 ml/min over the last year, or
Your kidney function (known as eGFR) has decreased by 3 ml/min every year for the last 5 years

If you are on tolvaptan, you can take part in IMPEDE-PKD if you have been on tolvaptan for 6 months or longer, and a stable dose for 3 months.

Restrictions

You may not be able to take part in the IMPEDE‑PKD trial if you:

Have diabetes or another cause of kidney disease (except high blood pressure), or
Have blood pressure higher than 160/100 after a period of rest, or
Have heart failure that causes you significant symptoms, or
Have a liver condition not caused by polycystic liver disease where your liver enzymes (blood test) are twice the upper limit of normal, or
Have untreated vitamin B12 deficiency, or
Have a reason you cannot take metformin, or
Are currently taking metformin, or
Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant within the next 3 years, or
Have another medical condition including active cancer or organ transplant, or
Have previously had dialysis
